Short History of the College Library

                The college library shares its  long and glorious history with the College itself. The College authority took interest to development of the library from the outset. Foundation of the library was laid by the Principal Aswini Kumar Choudhury and the assistant Librarian Sri Bhabani Prasad Sen. Sri Rana Mitra Sen was the first full time Librarian of the College (04.05.1960). In 1961 the library was shifted to the old building, Sri Sabita Prasad Dubey was the Librarian for a long time in the development period of the college. The open access system and cataloguing system was started from 1974-1975.

                Our library started with only 148 text books at the beginning. The number of books was only one thousand before the college got the status of Government Sponsored. The growth of the library Collection can be said to have begun from the year 1971, when the number of the number of books was 9,866. In the year 1981, the number of books was 15,384, in 1991 the number was 22,578 and now at present there are more than 32500+ books in the library.

     The library has 24 wall maps and the subscribes to 15 printed Journals, 1 e-Journal and 1 blended Journal (Online+Printed). The library has grown up mainly with the help of recurring grant of the College and sometimes grant from UGC. At present the development of the library is solely dependent on the grant from UGC. The Library also got the donation from the teachers, students, ex-student and others for its development. Sri Sohanlal Dugar of Calcutta donated Rs 2000 in 1963 for purchasing books.

        The library is located in administrative building of the college with total space 2500 sq. ft., Out of 2500 sq. ft. 1500 sq ft. are used for stack purpose and 1000 sq. ft. for reading and lending purpose.

        College Library now uses KOHA as an integrated library Management system for acquisitions, cataloguing, Circulation of books and online public access. The Library Technical department uses MARC format for cataloguing of books and Z39.50 technology to search for and retrieve catalogue records.
