About Department

Sripat Singh College is one of the 24 colleges of Murshidabad, situated at Jiaganj, which was established  on 1st August,1949 and it began to step forward as a co-educational intermediate college ,and on 1st July,1954 as a govt. sponsored co-educational degree college .From its inception Sripat Singh College has been in the forefront with great success for updating and developing the academic atmosphere in this remote part of West Bengal. At present Honours in almost all subjects of science and humanities group. The department of History was established in the year 1949 with UG-General  course .And the Honours course  was established in 1967-68. Presently there are 4 Assistant professors & 1  SACT in this department .Nearly 294 students are taught in Honours  coure and 1200 students are taught in General course. This department conducts educational tour almost in every year. In 2011 nearly 70 students with 4 teachers went to Gaur , Malda .W.B. for an educational tour and students were motivated .In the year 2013 almost 62 students with 4 teacher went for Rajgir. Malda and Buddhgaya .This tour was also fruitful for the students and also for the teachers.

This department organized many seminars. In 2012, February 23-24 a seminar was organized jointly with the department of Philosophy. It was state level seminar on Ahimsa and Buddha, Jain & Gandhi an Philosophy. Dignitaries from different universities came as resource person. Near about 150 students and 50 outside participants attended he seminar. This seminar was a great success. A two day national seminar was organized by this department on 3-4 December, 2013.The theme was Comprehensive seminar of Bengal After Independence. Speaker from NEHU. KU. Assam University came to deliver their valuable lectures. Students and participants numbering almost 260 attended the seminar. All were enriched b the seminar. In 2015.on 11th of December a national seminar was organized by this department on Sufism and Indian Culture. Resource persons from AMU.CU, KU came to enrich our knowledge. Near about 250 participants and students attended the seminar. All the students and participants got enriched.

This department has been able to publish two books with ISBN NOS.  in this year .One book is entitle as “Many Faces of Bengal after Indepandence” edite by  two members of the department Dr. Sharmila Datta Banik and Sri Sagar Simlandy and the other book entitled as “Sufism and Indian :Interpretative Essays” edited by Emili Rumi and Swapan Kumar Sarkar who are also members of this department. These   books have been well accepted by the readers.

 Student and teachers inter-action is also very cordial in the department. Many students of the department are now doing prestigious jobs in various fields. Some students are also pursuing their research work in various universities. So thus department is doing its academic and extracurricular activities with much spontaneity.
